FAQ's

Answers to common questions

Q: Where do my donation dollars go?
A: As a donor, you can direct Roslyn School Foundation as to how you would like your funds used. A donor can specify their funds be directed toward a specific project (new or existing), help grow the endowment fund, or divided to fund more than one initiative (ex. 50% towards the endowment, 50% towards a matching grant application). We can meet with prospective donors to discuss various donation options available. Contact the Foundation for more details.

Q: Will I receive a tax receipt for my donation to Roslyn School Foundation?
A: As a federally registered charitable organization (Charitable Organization No. • Numéro de charité: 84935 2273 RR0001), the Foundation will issue tax receipts per the guidelines set out by Canada Revenue Agency. Common examples of when a tax receipt can or cannot be issued: (a) gifting of a good(s) can generate a tax receipt however there are conditions regulating the amount of the tax receipt issued - they are generally based on FMV (fair-market-value of the good), (b) gifting service will not generate a tax receipt, (c) in some instances a minimum value threshold will be established for a tax receipt to be issued. If you or your organization would like to discuss giving options and how it impacts receipting, please contact us and we will be pleased to review the options with you.

Q: Will Roslyn School Foundation contact me with more donation opportunities and event news after I make a donation?
A: That depends whether a registered individual has provided the Foundation with their permission to be contacted and for what purpose(s). Individuals can change their permission status for Foundation communication by contacting us to review.

Q: Where can I find Roslyn School Foundation's office when I visit the school?
A: We do not have a physical office as it is cost prohibitive. Instead, you can contact us in advance to schedule a in-person meeting if the matter warrants.

Q: Why was Roslyn School Foundation created?
A:
In 2004, concerned alumni, parents and friends of Roslyn School came together with the desire to create an organization for capital fundraising, a reality in today's public school system. One year later in 2005, the Roslyn School Foundation was founded with an initial goal of raising $100,000 by September 2008 (“100K for 100 years”) to mark Roslyn School’s 100th Anniversary. The founding members that formed the inital Board of Directors of the Foundation were Jasmin Uhthoff (past President; former Roslyn parent), Michael Krausse (past Treasurer; former Roslyn parent), Wanda Leah G. Trineer (former Roslyn parent), and Christopher Wiegand (past Secretary; continues to be an active community member who works with a number of charitable organizations).

Q: As a parent with a child at Roslyn School, why should I choose to give my time to the Roslyn School Foundation versus Roslyn HandS (Home and School Association)?
A: Given the time, a parent can decide to volunteer for both the Foundation and HandS. The Foundation is seeks to focus efforts on capital fundraising working in partnership with
Roslyn HandS, Roslyn School administration and teachers, Roslyn Governing Board, the English Montreal School Board (EMSB), le Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS), local businesses, national and multi-national corporations as well as like-minded organizations. Another of the Foundation's mandates is to assist in the development and growth of Roslyn School's alumni base. Please feel free to contact the Foundation for more information on how you can volunteer an area specific to the Foundation. Put another way, the Foundation will focus activities outside of Roslyn School whereas HandS is active inside the school on a daily basis.

Q: I'm a resident of the neighbourhood and want to know how I can help?
A: Roslyn School Foundation aims to work with the community to bring awareness of Roslyn School's needs and wishes. We can discuss how residents can support the school through the Foundation (volunteer, donations, event participant, or cheering on the students during public outdoor events).

Q: How do I volunteer for the Roslyn School Foundation?
A: The Foundation welcomes volunteers and new members. As we continue to grow and evolve, we will require additional support from people like you who want to see Roslyn School remain the best possible public school option on the Island of Montreal. There are many opportunities the support the Foundation and the best way to find out how you can help is to contact us. There's no limit to what you can do to advance the work of the Foundation.

Q: I'd like to support Roslyn School Foundation but given my work and personal schedule I don't think I have time to volunteer. How else can I help?
A: As a charitable organization the Foundation not only seeks volunteers and financial donations but also welcomes gifts of products (for use by the Foundation or to be auctioned at fundraising events) and services to keep operating costs to a minimum. Perhaps you can lend us your expertise as an advisor on various initiatives (ex. legal review of contracts, financial planning for the endowment fund, public relations guidance as we develop our communications material, project management for events, grant writing and application, design marketing material, provide an introduction to interested stakeholders who want to support public eduction in your field of expertise, to name a few) or (donate a venue for an event, etc.).

Q: I graduated from Roslyn School and would like to contact a former classmate. Can Roslyn School Foundation provide me with that classmate's contact information?
A: For privacy reasons, Roslyn School Foundation is not authorized to share contact information of individuals who have registered with us nor do we sell contact information to 3rd parties. The Foundation is working on creating an Alumni networking area by late 2015 to facilitate classmate searches and possible reunions. Check our Events and Alumni section from time to time for more news.

Q: My business seeks to support organizations such as Roslyn School Foundation. How can we present an opportunity to the Foundation?
A: Please contact us and specify (a) a brief outline of the opportunity, (b) what you require from Roslyn School Foundation, (c) timing. We can then schedule a meeting or presentation to the Board of Directors to officially review the opportunity and determine whether there is a mutual fit for both organizations.

Q: How can I share my Roslyn School story?
A: We welcome stories from all former Roslyn School Foundation donors, volunteers as well as Roslyn School students, parents, administration, teachers, staff and community members. To inspire other Foundation donors, prospective students/parents and share the school's wonderful spirit, we will select appropriate stories to be featured from time to time on this Web site in the Alumni section. The Foundation (a) reserves the right to edit stories submitted, (b) you will be contacted before your story is published to secure your permission, (c) not all stories can be published. Start by contacting us and provide us with your name and email address. There are over 100+ years worth of Roslyn School memories amongst us.
